These included wearing extra clothes and keeping the oven open after cooking.

SSE advised cuddling a pet could help customers stay warm.

Eating porridge was another suggestion on how to keep warm.

Customers were also advised to open curtains “when it’s sunny, to warm your home naturally”.

If that happens average households on a supplier’s default tariff will see the cost of their gas and electricity rise from £1,300 to £2,000.

There are reports Boris Johnson has been discussing the issue with his Chancellor Rishi Sunak and believes ministers need to support those on low incomes affected by the price rises.

Labour have said that targeted support for those on lower incomes could help them save as much as £600.
