The northbound carriageway is shut between junction 22 for Coalville and Markfield, Leicestershire, to junction 23 for Loughborough in the same county. A lorry has careered into the central reservation following the smash this morning.

Queues are back to junction 21a for Leicester north and Kirkby Muxloe.

A diversion is yet to be put in place but some drivers are leaving at junction 22 to take A511 west, bypassing Coalville, to use local roads north through to Shepshed at junction 23.

But the A511 is busy back to Markfield, Nottinghamshire Live reports.

A spokesperson from National Highways said: “Carriageway blocked M1 northbound between junction 22 at Leicester and junction 23 at Loughborough due to a collision involving two lorries.

“Recovery are on scene and are moving vehicles from the carriageway.

“Congestion is building with the queue of traffic spanning over three miles back to junction 22.”

In an update, National Highways stated: “The M1 is now blocked in both directions to safely recover a HGV from the central reservation.

“Please allow extra time for your journey this morning as delays are building on the approach.”

Southbound traffic is slow but moving, largely due to onlookers.

It’s currently congested from junction 23a – the A42 link – for East Midlands Airport.
