Crew members from the London Fire Brigade arrived after a five-roomed flat on the eighth floor of the building caught alight. Firefighters, who wore breathing apparatus, went on to rescue a woman who has since been treated at the scene by personnel from the London Ambulance Service.
They received 40 calls about the blaze.
Firefighters, including those from Plaistow, East Ham, Greenwich, Shoreditch and other stations, brought the blaze under control by around 23.48.
Station Commander Matt Williams, who was at the scene, said: “Firefighters evacuated 20 people from the building and rescued four people via an internal staircase.

London Fire Brigade stress the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Officers from the Metropolitan Police are also reported to have arrived at the scene.
Writing on their official Twitter account, Tower Hamlets Police said: “Officers from Central East BCU are on scene assisting colleagues from the LFB & LAS in response to this incident.”
